A plate 100 mm wide and 10 mm thick is to be welded with another plate by means of transverse welds at the ends. If the plates are subjected to a load of 70 kN, find the size of weld for static load The permissible tensile stress should not exceed 70 MPa.

Step: 1

Given Data
Width of the plate, w=100mm
The thickness of the plate, t=10 mm
Load, P=70KN
permissible tensile stress = 70 MPa
Transverse filled welds =1.5

Step: 2

The maximum load which the plates can carry for billets welds
P = 1.414 × s × l × τ
70000 = 1.414×10×l×70
70000 = 989.1×L
L=70.7142 mm
Weld design: In order to allow for static and stopping of the load is 12.5 mm should be added to the length
L = 70.7142+12.5 = 83.21 mm
Hence the size of the weld is 83.21 mm
